King Erik Eriksson is said to have taken the initiative to the building of this church in the middle of the 13th century, to commemorate the battle of Lena in 1208. The three towers were built in the 16th century to remind of the visit of King Valdemar of Sweden, King Håkan of Norway and the Swedish nobleman Birger Jarl (earl Birger) on Easter Day in1258.
