The Skuldelev ships

These five ships were sunk in the Roskildefjord near Skuldelev, about 20 kilometres north of Roskilde. The reason for that, was that they should block the straightest passage in towards Roskilde, which was the capital of Denmark at that time.
In 1962 the site was encircled by a wall of ironbars, the water was pumped out, and the ships were removed and saved.... a fantastic operation ! The ships are called Skuldelev 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6, so I guess there was a Skuldelev 4 also, which was in a far too bad state to be preserved....
There are more photos of each ship on the next few pages, but if you want all the details about them you should go straight to the vikingship museum in Roskilde, Denmark.
